Annual Athletic Department End Of The Year Awards Announced

Bakersfield, CA - The Bakersfield College Athletics Department annually recognizes the accomplishments of the student athletes annually with both academic and athletic focused awards. As a department during the 2018-2019 year, the Renegades captured a total of three team conference championships (Women's Volleyball, Softball and Baseball) and eleven individual conference titles. This years awards and the winners are featured below. The awards were announced at the annual student-athlete barbecue hosted outside the Romain Clerou Field House (pictures below). 

Scholar Athletes of the Year (4.0 GPA)

Female - Brianna Mendez, Women's Basketball

 

Male - (Co-Winners) - Conrad Dalton, Men's Tennis & Justin Solario, Men's Swimming

 

Athlete of the Year

Female - Gabby Lugo – Competing in both Cross-Country and Track & Field this season, Gabby finished her cross-country season finishing in 10th place and was named All-American. In Track she has qualified for the CCCAA Championships in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m and as a leg in the 4x400 relay.

Male- Carson Olivas – Carson followed up a stellar freshman season at punter for the Renegades winning back-to-back CCCFCA All-American awards and being named to 2018 SCFA North 1st-Team All-Conference. He led the state in punting average at 41.4 yds/punt. One of only two BC student athletes during the 2018-2019 season to land on Division I power five conference rosters after their completing their Renegade careers, Carson has already enrolled at UCLA and spent the spring challenging for the starting punting role for this fall on the Bruin football team.

 

Career Achievement

Female - Kylee Fahy – For two consecutive seasons, Kylee has been arguably the most dominant pitcher in the CCCCAA. She finished the 2018 season #1 in strikeouts at 289 and finished the 2019 regular season at #1 in strikeouts with 275. She was a key piece in leading the 2019 team to the best conference record in school history at a perfect 16-0. She was named both back-to-back conference pitcher of the year and a member of the All-State team. Kylee finishes her career as one of the most dominant two-year starters to pitch in the circle for Renegade Softball.   

 

Male - Jacob Whitby – in 2018, as freshman, Jacob took the conference championship in the discuss and followed up that performance by winning it again in 2019. His throw of 153 feet beat the second place competitor by 6.5 feet and qualified him for SoCals. This season he added a conference championship in the hammer (and qualified for SoCals) with a throw of 167.5 feet beating the second place competitor by almost 19 feat.

 

Newcomers of the Year

Female - Daran Towns – In her first year on the Renegade Swim Team, Daran exploded onto the conference scene placing first and breaking school records in the 100m Free, 200m Free and 500m Free. At the end of the Conference Championships she was named the 2019 Women's Western State Conference Co-Swimmer of the year.

Male - Justin Harrington – Breaking onto the field playing safety as a freshman, Justin recorded four interceptions, one he returned 96 yards for a touchdown, along with 40 tackles. He was named the SCFA Defensive Player of the Week in week five of the season and was named to the 2018 SCFA North 1st-Team All-Conference.

Individual Performance

Female - Kayleen Sanchez – On Friday April 12th at the WSC Tennis Championships Kayleen took the Women's Singles Championship with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over teammate Paige Darstein. She and Paige then teamed up to win the doubles championship over the Canyons doubles team, 6-2, 6-0.

Male - Zach Williams – On March 1st while playing on the road against COS, Zach had an extraordinary offensive performance going 5/5 from the plate with 2 homeruns, 7 RBI's and 3 runs scored.

Female - Brooke McDonald, Women's Soccer

Male - Justin Solario, Men's Soccer

Female - Jessica Merante, Volleyball

Male - Zach Hartsfield, Football
