Gauchos rout Renegades in non-conference battle

Gauchos rout Renegades in non-conference battle

The Saddleback men's tennis team enjoyed its most lopsided win of the season with a 9-0 victory over Bakersfield College on Friday afternoon on the Saddleback tennis courts.  The Gauchos never lost a set in sweeping past the Renegades.

Saddleback entered after losing four straight matches against some of the more talented teams in the region and needed a confidence booster with just five conference matches and one non-conference match remaining on the schedule.  The Gauchos made the best of the opportunity, dominating from start to finish.

Saddleback won three straight matches in doubles play, winning 8-4 at No. 1 singles and 8-3 at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles in taking a 3-0 lead into the singles portion of the team match.

Saddleback then ripped through the singles portion, winning 73 of 95 games.  Lucas Fortt led off the singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.  Thomas Henrick won by the exact score at No. 5 singles as the Gauchos closed out the team match with a 5-0 lead.  Shortly thereafter, Max Svensson closed out his match at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win and the rout was on.

The most intriguing match of the day happened on court two where Riley McCall had to go to a tiebreaker in the first set (8-6) before cruising to a 6-2 win in set two.  Aria Goshtaei was pressed at No. 6 singles, but managed a 6-4, 6-4 win over his opponent.

Saddleback (5-6, 0-3) will be back in action with a match at Orange Coast College on Tuesday.  The Gauchos and Pirates are scheduled to start at 2:00 PM in Costa Mesa.
