Canyons Win Fourth Straight 75-57 in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. — College of the Canyons started slow but finished strong, claiming a 75-57 victory over conference rival Bakersfield College on Saturday night to represent the team's fourth win in as many games.

Canyons (12-10, 3-0) found itself playing from behind in the early stages after the Renegades held the state's No. 11 ranked offense to just eight points in the first quarter.

The Cougars, which are averaging better than 93 points per game during the current win streak, were quick to respond. 

COC turned the tables on Bakersfield in the second quarter, outscoring the Renegades 23-10 to take a 31-25 halftime advantage.

Sophomores Kalana Inemer and Morgan Bizzell did the bulk of the scoring for Canyons, on a night in which the Cougars shot just under 38 percent from the floor.

Inemer finished with 23 points after going 9-of-14 for the game. Her 19 rebounds were a game high.

Bizzell scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds.

CiCi O'Brien had 12 points and Gissel Sanchez ended with a game-high eight assists.

Bakersfield (8-13, 2-2) attempted to keep pace with a 24-point effort from forward Octavia Croney, but ultimately found themselves outmatched. 

The Renegades did not score more than 19 points in any quarter and shot just 28 percent as a team, including a 1-of-8 mark from downtown.

Canyons is currently tied with West L.A. College (18-4, 3-0) for the top spot in the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division standings.

The Cougars and Wildcats will meet for the first time at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, in the Cougar Cage.
