BC GETS SOLID PITCHING, CAN'T CAPITALIZE IN DOUBLE HEADER DISAPPOINTMENT

The Bakersfield College Baseball Team (4-5) dropped a doubleheader to El Camino (7-0) 7-1 and 2-1 at Gerry Collis Field Saturday.

BC and El Camino were originally scheduled to play game two of their three game set on Friday following Thursday's loss, but wet weather forced today's doubleheader.

"El Camino is a quality ballclub, and you can't make mistakes and give them extra outs and get away with it, or you walk away with three 'Ls'," Coach Tim Painton said, "Luke Andrews had a no-hitter going in the sixth inning, and we scored one in the seventh, but mishandle a fly ball to lead off the eighth, and they tie it up and we couldn't take advantage of chances to score through the whole game."

Andrews held El Camino hitless for five and two thirds innings, before Ty Conrad singled to centerfield. He was left stranded when Andrews induced a groundout to second base from Noah Barba.

The Warriors didn't reach base again until Darrian Sylvester tripled in the top of the eigth on a misplayed ball, but Andrews buckled down and struck out pinch hitter Ryan Eastbur swinging, and Jake Carr looking. Trevor Casan then hit a two-out RBI triple to score Sylvester to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the 8th, Harley Lopez hit a leadoff double. Kamron Willman hit an infield single and Lopez advanced to give BC runners at the corners with no outs. Zach Huston struck out swinging for out number one, Harry Tyler was retired on an infield fly, and Yukoh Saito hit a grounder to the shortstop who flipped the ball to second for the force out to end the inning.

"We didn't give Andrews any breathing room. He was absolutely outstanding tonight. And unfortunately, we had a lot of scoring opportunities and we didn't capitalize on them, and that's how you end up losing a ballgame," Painton said.

Andrews was saddled with the loss despite giving up just one earned run on five hits and one walk, striking out nine and pitching a full nine innings.

The first half of the double header wasn't nearly as excruciating, but followed the same map to a defeat. Starter Austin Toerner was solid over seven innings, surrendering just one earned run on five hits, while walking three against eight strikeouts. But he was charged with four runs as BC committed five errors.

The Renegades will host Moorpark College on February 14th at 6pm before beginning a three game series against Golden West College on Friday, February 17th at 6pm at Gerry Collis Field.
