Bakersfield College (2-3) beat Mission College (1-2) 4-3 at Reedley College on the opening day of the College of the Sequoias Tournament Thursday afternoon

Chris Diaz (1-1) turned in his second straight quality start of the young season in as many attmepts, holding Mission College of Santa Clara to just six hits and three runs across 8 2/3 innings, while striking out six and issuing zero walks.

Diaz was the tough-luck loser in an opening day pitcher's duel that saw him nearly match Moorpark lefty and MLB draftee Andrew Nardi's lights-out performance. But today, BC's bats, gloves, and bullpen came through for the Stockdale product.

Hector Ruvalcaba was two for four with a solo homer-BC's first of the season-and an RBI double, while Colby Freeman tripled and later scored to give Diaz all the run support he would need.

Nate Ortiz nailed down the win in the ninth to pick up the save, and BC will play Hartnell College Friday at 10am in day two of the tourney.
