Huntington Beach, CA - For the second game in a row, Bakersfield College's football team was on the short end of the stat sheet. However, the Renegades led where it mattered most, on the scoreboard as BC improved to 3-0 on the season by defeating Golden West College 20-19 in Huntington Beach during a matinee game on Saturday, September 18th.
Golden West took the lead first after both teams exchanged several punts in the first seven minutes. After the Rustlers scored first on a 1-yard run at 6:26 of the 1st quarter they missed the ensuing extra-point kick for a 6-0 lead. That missed extra point would eventually prove to be the difference in the game.
The Gades took a 7-6 lead near the end of the 1st quarter on Antonio Robinson's (freshman, running back) 1-yard run with three seconds remaining on the clock. Freshman Pete Delis' extra point kick was good.
The Renegades then took a 14-6 lead after sophomore Richard Lara's 25-yard touchdown completion to wide receiver Myran Randle with 1:58 remaining in the first half.
Into the third quarter, BC knew they were not home free just yet. Golden West was able to pull within 1 point (14-13) of BC in the third quarter on a 6-yard TD pass at the 7:32 mark.
The Rustlers' missed extra point back in the first quarter loomed large as Golden West scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass at 7:30 in the 4th quarter, taking a 19-13 lead. Forced to go for a two-point conversion, BC held ground as the attempt failed once more.
Bakersfield then regained the lead for good on sophomore Isaac Jernagin's 6 -yard touchdown with 3:40 remaining in the game. Golden had a chance to win the game off of a field goal with 16 seconds left but another failed kick would continue to haunt the Rustlers.
The Gades take their perfect record on the road again next Saturday, September 25th as they travel to Walnut, CA to take on Mt. Sac College (1-0, whose last two scheduled games have been postponed) at 6 pm.
