Bakersfield Drops First Conference Game

Bakersfield, CA – Saturday night's game featuring two teams ranked in the top 10 in the state, #4 College of the Canyons defeated #8 Bakersfield College, 35-21 on homecoming night at Memorial Stadium.

In a game filled with several turnovers, it was the Cougars (6-0) who capitalized the most.

COC got on the board first seven plays after intercepting a quarterback Dexter Frampton pass as Colton Doyle 1-yard rushing touchdown put the Cougars up 7-0. The Renegades would tie the game at 7 a piece on a 14-play, 77-yard drive cumulating with Frampton connecting with wide receiver Isaac Jernagin on a 22-yard touchdown pass at the 4:04 mark in the quarter.

The Cougars would take the lead for good scoring three unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter. Two of their three touchdowns came as a result of two more interceptions. Leading 14-7, COC scored on the first play after intercepting Frampton for the second time, then scored again after another interception, taking a 28-7 lead into halftime.

BC scored first in the third quarter on a Frampton to freshman Xavier Marshall 27-yard touchdown at the 13:24 mark of the quarter, making the score 28-14. Canyons then answered back with an 8 play 91-yard drive highlighted by a Doyle 56-yard pass completion during the drive. Damon Banks would later score upping COC's lead to 35-14.

The Gades made the game interesting in the fourth quarter driving down to the COC 1-yard line before the turnover bug bit BC again as Jernagin, playing quarterback, couldn't handle a bad snap. Jernagain recovered the snap at the Cougars 9-yard line but two plays later, Bakersfield turned the ball over on downs.

In the waning minute of the game, Frampton hooked up with Jernagain on a 27-yard touchdown pass with nine seconds remaining, making the final score 35-21.

On the night, Frampton completed 30 passes for 311 yards spread among nine receivers.

The Renegades (4-2) will travel to the coast next Saturday to take on the Ventura Pirates before returning to Memorial Stadium October 30th.
