BAKERSFIELD, CA – The BC men's golf team have shined up their clubs as they prepare to tee off for the first time this season on Sunday, Jan. 26. Returning for his fourth year leading the Renegades is head coach Wes Coble.
"I am excited about this new group of young Renegade golfers," said Coble. "We have built a great foundation in the previous years and now it is time for these younger athletes to start building this program up brick by brick."
For the Renegades, the 2020 season will begin with a freshman-dominate team – only two returners and eight new faces. Among those returners are Blake Keesey, who will hold the numbers one spot for BC and team captain Ghanish Shah, former redshirt and possible number two/three golfer. Keesey, is coming off a great off-season of competition posting scores ranging from 67-74.
Young but skilled, would describe this young team. Coach Coble explains, "They are all extremely talented and dedicated to the program and the brand. Their commitment to our mission and program goals have allowed them to be successful in transitioning to Bakersfield College. We will see how it translates on the course in competition."
Coble adds the team will definitely be challenged and they will be their biggest competition. "In golf just as in life we have to get out of our own way to achieve success. We don't look at any other programs as competition. We are competing against faceless opponents and just have to beat the course. 18 pars will win the day."
The men's golf program is extremely grateful for the community support they receive. "This game is like no other I've coached. We are the only program that relies on our community in development. We don't practice on campus but lean on the support of our country clubs and thank them daily for their unwavering support of myself, the staff and players. We are looking forward to a great season and want to make our community, campus and the Renegade faithful proud."
The 'Gades will begin the fall season with the first tournament at La Purisima for the Pt. Conception Open on January 26th and 27th. Sunday's tee time is schedule for 7am at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc, CA and Monday will wrap up the tournament starting at 7 am. Coach Coble adds, "La Purisima will eat you alive if you let it. It gives even the most seasoned golfers a difficult time; but we feel that we are prepared, focused and ready to step on the course and be successful."
The Renegades will host two home matches this season. The first is a Western State Conference match on Monday, March 2 at Stockdale Country Club. They will then host the Rig City Invite on Monday, April 13 at Bakersfield Country Club.
