Bakersfield Falls to Citrus in a Nail-biter

BAKERSFIELD, CA – The Bakersfield College women's basketball team were looking for revenge against the only team they have lost to in the conference this season, the Citrus College Owls. Last time, the Renegades not only struggled from behind the arc, but their field goals were at 37%. The team fell by just four points. Tonight, BC took the game to the final minutes but in the end the Owls took the conference lead and won, 63-66.

Visiting Citrus came out of the gates showing their dominance. At the first timeout BC was falling behind 10-5 while the Owls continue to increase their lead slowly. After the first 10 minutes of play, the quarter ended 14-26. Into the second quarter and the Renegades step their game up by scoring a total of 19 points compared to the Owls seven. Bakersfield managed to tie the game up at 33 to go into the locker room feeling confident.

Bakersfield's bench really showed out for their teammates as they score 14-2. The team shot 58% from the free throw line. Julie Hernandez and Jenna Billington led in the first half, with Billington scoring two out three behind the arc.

The Renegades showed no mercy coming out of their 15-minute break and sank four points before allowing the Owls to score. Unfortunately, CC broke through and went ahead in the third quarter scoring a total of 24 points compared to BC's 15 points. The quarter ended, 48-57. Bakersfield was not going to end their night without a fight. The finals minutes came down to the wire, down by one point in the final seconds then a foul would give Citrus a three point lead. BC tried for the three with two seconds left but a bounce off the rim would give the Owls the win.

Leading the team for the night was Hernandez with 16 points, 7 rebounds and Kathleen Rodriguez with 12 pints and 16 rebounds. As a team, BC scored 18-12 off turnovers and 21-4 benches.

With the loss, the Renegades drop to 16-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play on the season. Bakersfield host the next two conference games on Saturday against Glendale at 5PM and on Monday for a rescheduled game with Antelope Valley at 5PM.
