Women's Basketball Wins Season Opener

BAKERSFIELD, CA – The Bakersfield College women's basketball team hosted the Reedley College Tigers for the Renegades 2022-23 season opener on Thursday evening for their annual Bakersfield Crossover tournament. Bakersfield got out to a slow start but in the end the team worked collectively, earning a first win on the season, 51-40.

Despite a run from the Tigers early in the first quarter, BC was down by four at the end of period. Down by six points with 2:30 left, sophomore Isyss Scott brought her team up by four with a jump shot. The first quarter ended 12-8, RC.

The second quarter saw Bakersfield outscore Reedley by four points to go to the locker room tied at 18. Freshman Cynia Scott and sophomore Leila Flores each had three points and six rebounds combined to lead the team. Foul shots helped the Renegades come back in the first half, 75% compared to Reedley's 50%.

BC took a hold of their first lead within the first minute of the second half. Even though the RC would tie the game back at 24 points, Bakersfield found their way back and went on a 9-1 run to start controlling the ballgame. The Renegades outscored their opponents 24-10 in the third period to lead, 42-28.

The Tigers continued to fight, clawing back to within 10 points from the Renegades three times in the final quarter. Fortunately, BC had built a large enough lead to send Reedley home with a loss.

With the first win of the season, the Renegades will play one more game to end the Bakersfield Cross Over against Pasadena on Saturday at 6:00pm.
