BC BRINGS HOME TWO TITLES FROM TAMANA TOURNEY

There are over 500 student athletes participating on 20 intercollegiate teams at Bakersfield College, but one is representing all of them especially well right now; Julio Fuentes, formerly of Golden Valley High School and Clackamas Community College, is wrestling at 184 pounds this season, and he's doing it remarkably well.

He won this weekend's Modesto Tournament in dominating fashion, pinning his finals opponent in the first period on the way to claiming Outstanding Upper Weights Wrestler of the tournament.

This championship comes on the heels of his dominance at the Santa Ana Tournament last weekend where he also claimed the first place spot at 184 in a notoriously competitive tournament that only places out to the fourth spot.

Fuentes has only lost one match this season, and it came when he was wrestling 197s during the season opening Bakersfield Duals.

"He's a hard worker, and he has certainly enjoyed some success early on this season. But we still haven't seen the best of him. He has some things he can improve on, technique-wise…so the best is still yet to come from Julio," Coach Brett Clark said.

BC Heavyweight Romero Macias also claimed an individual title in Modesto after coming into the tournament unseeded.

"Romero wrestled really well," Coach Clark said, "He won a lot of slim victories in a competitive class and grinded out a lot of wins on the way to the championship. This was a big victory for us."

Pedro Corona (133 lbs) claimed the second place spot for the Renegades.

Pedro Sarabia (125 lbs) and Andrew Binger (165 lbs) both placed sixth after forfeiting their final matches of the day on Coach's Decision.

"Wrestling is different than other collegiate sports; I have to make the best decisions and calls based on positioning these guys for the Regionals and State Championships," Clark Said.
