BAKERSFIELD, CA – Bakersfield College men's wrestling program opens up the 2019 season at home in the Gil Bishop Sports Center this weekend. After finishing 6th as a team at the 2018 CCCAA Wrestling finals with six Renegades placing in the top 10, fans can expect the 'Gades to be competing until the end.
When asked what Head Wrestling Coach Brett Clark is looking forward to this season, "Just getting our first match under our belts to see what we need to work on and what we need to do better. Fans can expect our team to compete and wrestle to the end."
The Renegades are returning eight sophomores including the lone state winner Keithen Estrada, who placed 7th at 2018 CCCAA in the 125-weight class, and Alexis Becerra (141), who served as an alternate at state and placed 7th at the Southern Regionals. Other sophomore returners include Jordan Cooper, Donald Oliver, Josiah Quiroz, Branden Riley, Armando Varelas and 25 new freshman Renegades who are ready to strap up in the red and white
Coach Clark is certain his returners will show the young guys the right way to be college student athletes, "Being responsible in the classroom as well on the athletic field."
Looking forward in the season, the `Gades are gearing up to take on and defeat conference foes' West Hills, Cuesta College, and Fresno City, who have won state titles in the last three seasons. Fortunately for the BC wrestling team, they will be facing West Hills and Fresno in duals at home. Coach Clark and the Renegades would love to fill the gym from the support of fans, friends, and family to cheer for the red and white. The Renegades begin their season this weekend at home in the Gil Bishop Sports Center starting Friday, September 13th at 6pm with the Victor Valley Dual and again on Saturday, September 14th at 10am for the BC Dual Tourney.
