Women's Volleyball Wins 19th Straight Match to Advance to CCCAA State Championships

Bakersfield, CA – The Bakersfield College women's volleyball team hosted San Diego Mesa Saturday night in the Gil Bishop Sports Center in the second round of the CCCAA Women's Volleyball State Playoffs and came away with a dramatic 3-2 victory to advance to the CCCAA state championships this coming week.

In the first set, BC jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead before the Olympians came back to chip away at the lead. BC kept the momentum together and finished a 25-18 first set to go up 1-0.

The second set started out much closer with both teams trading points early on. It wasn't until mid-way through the set that BC built a lead and closed out the set with another 25-18 win.

The third set started out back and forth, but Mesa took a small advantage mid-way throughout and ended up taking the set 25-22 to stay in the match and avoid the sweep.

Mesa began the fourth set hot and never let up en route to a 25-23 win. The Olympians took that momentum into an 8-3 start in the 5th, but BC would not back down quickly and came back to win the 5th and final set, 16-14.

Leading the way for BC was both Lanie Camarillo and Penelope Zepeda with 20 kills each. Kohra Garcia added 18 digs and Jessica Merante 16.

"The energy in here was crazy," said Camarillo after the match, "We're just so blessed to have such an amazing team to come back after being down those last two sets. It's unbelievable. Absolutley amazing."

"You do everything for them," said Coach Ferreira, "It all matters for them. They do all the work. It's still a game. Pretty emotional because you want it for them, but really a lot of composure and unbelievable  toughness in big moments. Credit to them for maintaining the course. Pretty impressive - tough girls."

With the win, the Renegades extend their win streak to 19 matches. The Renegades will now move on to play in the CCCAA Women's Volleyball State Championships hosted by Solano College. They will play Fresno City College (27-3) at 4pm in the quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 30th.
