Men's Soccer Holds Skills Clinic at Police Activities League

This past Saturday, the Police Activities League (PAL) was filled with the sound of soccer balls being kicked, youth laughter, and the energy of the community coming together. The Bakersfield College Men's Soccer Team, led by their passionate coach Vayron Martinez, ran a clinic for kids at the PAL. A total of 27 young men from the BC team spent the morning guiding young players through drills, imparting their knowledge, and showing the next generation the beauty of soccer.

The event had been promoted with enthusiasm by Bakersfield College soccer alum and current BPD PAL officer, Jose Lara. Lara, who played for BC in the 2018 and 2019 seasons before moving on to Humboldt State in the spring of 2020, worked tirelessly to spread the word. Flyers were distributed and social media posts invited all local youth to come participate in the clinic.

When asked how the community could help support the PAL, Lara pointed to the importance of donations and grants. "The AJ Anand Legacy Foundation donated the sod for the field," he explained, "It's generous donations like that that keep these programs going for the kids." His words were a reminder of the power of community support and how vital it is for programs like PAL to thrive.

Didi Zamora, the PAL Community Relations Specialist, echoed Lara's sentiments, adding, "It is so great for all these kids to learn a different side of things. Soccer is just one of the many ways we provide opportunities for young people in this community."

But on this day, it was soccer that stole the show. As the sun beamed down on the field, the BC men's soccer team ran a variety of drills designed to help the youth develop their skills. From dribbling and passing exercises to shooting and agility tests, the players were eager to teach the next generation of soccer stars. For many of the children, including those from local youth teams like the "Inter Milan Youth 12," it was a dream come true.

"We're learning from the pros at the college," said one young player, a huge grin on his face as he practiced his footwork under the guidance of BC player, Cesar Ramirez. It was clear that these kids were inspired and motivated, not just by the drills but by the chance to connect with real athletes such as J'Meer Allen who was the goalie for a specific drill.  Allen, along with teammates Victor Melendez, Jovanny Salazar, and Jordee Magana had the greatest morning hyping up the young players, and making the exercise a fun competitive drill. You could hear them yelling out positive affirmations to the kids from across the field.  Many parents who were watching the clinic commented on how positive and encouraging the Bakersfield College players were.  "My daughter is not a great soccer player yet, but these boys are treating her like she is a pro," stated Natalie Martinez.

As the clinic came to a close, it was evident that the event was more than just an opportunity to learn soccer—it was about building relationships, fostering mentorship, and creating lasting memories. Thanks to the combined efforts of Bakersfield College's men's soccer team, Jose Lara, Didi Zamora, and all the community partners involved, Saturday's clinic was a massive success.

In the end, the event was a reminder that the power of sport goes far beyond the field. It's about community, growth, and the shared goal of helping young people succeed—on and off the pitch.
