BAKERSFIELD, CA - Coming off it's bye week, the Bakersfield College football team were hoping to pick up their first conference win of the season against the visiting high scoring Cerritos College Falcons but fell short 35-28 on Homecoming night at Memorial Stadium.
Cerritos put together three sustained touchdown drives in the first half before the Renegades closed the gap to 21-7 from quarterback Carson Woods 45 yard pass touchdown completion to running back Ian Jernigan with 18 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, the Falcons scored on a 4th and 1 at 4:45 increasing their lead to 28-7 after an interception by Cerritos that was returned to the BC five yard line. Bakersfield was able to score on their next possession as Jernigan scampered 15 yards into the end zone. Kicker Carlos Villa's PAT was good and the Gades trailed 28-14.
In the fourth quarter, Cerritos increased their lead once more to 35-14 after a 44 yard touchdown pass at the 12:24 mark. BC then marched 73 yards on their ensuing possession scoring on a 1 yard TD toss from Woods to Christian Morse making the score 35-21 with a little over nine minutes remaining in the game.
After a Falcons drive stalled with 1:37 remaining, the Renegades took possession at their own 12 yard line trailing by 2 touchdowns. Bakersfield got to within 35-28 when sophomore Ja'Daniel Nettles scored on a 2-yard run with 10 seconds remaining in the contest, aided by Cerritos penalties.
BC (2-4, 0-3) travels to Fullerton next Saturday for a 2pm contest against the Hornets (5-1, 3-0) before returning to Memorial Stadium for the first of 2 consecutive home games, Saturday October 25 versus East LA and Saturday November 1 vs Orange Coast. Kick Off for both games is 4pm and admission is free.
