The Bakersfield College women's basketball got off to a slow start and never recovered in losing to Citrus College, 94-61, at the Gil Bishop Sports Center on Saturday.

The visiting Owls jumped out to an 18-0 lead and remained in front by a comfortable margin the rest of way.

"Our first quarter just killed us," BC coach Paula Dahl said. "We dug too deep of a hole. Citrus, they have everything going. The have good inside play. They're quick. They have great shooting and they have a lot of depth."

MacKenzie Tevelde had 21 points and 9 rebounds and MacKaiela Tyler added 16 points and eight assists for the Renegades, who lost their second straight game.

Citrus shot 51.3-percent from the field overall and was 10 of 23 (43.5-percent) from behind the arc.

BC shot 33.3-percent from the floor.

Five Citrus players scored in double figures. Janae Chamois paced the Owls in scoring with 20 points. Natalie Gutierrez chipped in 18 points for Citrus, which extended its winning streak to three games and maintained its tie with LA Valley for second place in the West State-South Conference.

Down 36-10 at the end the first quarter, BC out-scored Citrus 41-38 over the next two periods before hitting another tough patch during the game's final 10-minute segment.

"After that first quarter I was proud of my kids," Dahl said. "….Emily Esnoz came off the bench and just battled her butt (off). "V" (Veronica Slade) has been sick. MacKaiela's ankle has hurt so bad that she can hardly walk. I demanded a lot out of them. Their effort never stopped. We kept them from scoring 100. I told them before the game, 'All I can ask is for you to give me everything you've got,' and they did."
