Monarchs Basketball Finishes Sophomore Night with Two Wins

VALLEY VILLAGE - Men's and Women's Basketball finished the 2022-23 regular season by sweeping Bakersfield on Sophomore Night.

Women's Basketball began the night with a dominating 89-53 win over Bakersfield.  The Monarchs jumped out to a strong 23-10 lead after the first quarter.  It was a full team blitz, with offense and defense shining bright. Sophomore Leena Vo led the charge, breaking away several times for easy layups.  In the second quarter, the Monarchs saw the younger players shine, with Sofi Sargsyan and Nia Brown scoring key buckets.

The second half of the game was equally as dominate.  Every Monarch but one scored in the game! Sophomore Jordyn Jiron led the team with a triple-double!  She had 21 points, including hitting five threes, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in the game.  Fellow sophomore Jacqueline Privado had 13 points of her own.  Dyani Del Castillo, another sophomore, had 12 points and 9 rebounds for the Monarchs.  Every sophomore contributed to the game, whether it was offensively behind the arc, or defensively stealing the ball and assisting in someone else's points.

Men's Basketball followed the Women with a 76-73 victory over Bakersfield.  It was a close battle all game, but the Monarchs prevailed behind a strong game from sophomore Andre Parris.  He scored a team leading 19 points and had five steals.  It was the younger Monarchs, though, that rounded out the strong win.  Sargent Jeffery had a double-double in the game with 14 points and 13 rebounds.  Fellow freshman Nigel Dickens was right behind Parris with 18 points.  Khalil Forrester had 16 points to help the Monarchs.

Womens' Basketball will move on to playoffs - information about when and where the game will be played will be out Sunday, February 19.  Men's Basketball completed their 2022-23 season tonight.  The Monarchs finished with two strong victories to end their season.

Congratulations to all our sophomores!  We can't wait to see where you move on to in the future.
