GADES FIGHT HISTORY AGAINST HANCOCK SATURDAY

BC wants to run away from an ugly record this weekend against Allan Hancock
BC wants to run away from an ugly record this weekend against Allan Hancock

But it isn't the only history on the line.

The Renegades (0-3) open conference play against the Bulldogs at home Saturday, and it's the first time in 75 years they've done so.

The last time BC Football started a season 0-3, the year was 1940. Gasoline cost 17 cents a gallon, the Chicago Bears beat the Washington Redskins 73-0 in the NFL Championship Game, and brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened a little hamburger stand in San Bernardino, Ca.

Since then, gasoline has gotten a little more expensive, the NFL Championship Game has become "The Super Bowl", and the McDonald brothers? Well, their hamburger stand became a global phenomena with over 36,000 restaurants around the world.

And what about Renegade Football?

Four National Championships, several State titles, over 20 conference championships, and more than 30 bowl appearances in the last 75 years.

They also moved from Griffith Field in 1955, and set up shop in the 20,000 seat Memorial Stadium which celebrates it's 60th birthday this year.

In the 2014 season, the 'Gades started 1-4 and turned things around by rattling off a 5 game regular season winning streak before beating Chaffey College in the Clifford Bradford Insurance Western State Bowl.

"I think we can do that again," running back Curtis McGregor said, "We can be that team (the one that played three really good quarters against #4 Long Beach) for entire games."

Indeed, a key factor for the Renegades in 2015 is strength of schedule. They played the three toughest teams in Southern California- and according to Californian beat writer Jeff Evans "three of the top six in the state"-to open the season and lead into conference play.

But now things start over for the Renegades as they embark on conference play and try to be more like the Renegade teams of the first 60 years of Memorial Stadium; those teams almost always had a great birthday gift each season for Her... and she's stood tall and kept watch over Bakersfield from her perch at one of the highest points in town during a time when so much has changed in our community.

Let's hope she sees a little more change in the immediate future.
