BAKERSFIELD, CA - The Bakersfield College women's basketball team claimed its first Western State-South Conference victory of the season on Saturday.

The Renegades trounced Santa Monica College 71-42 at the Gil Bishop Sports Center in a battle between the two remaining teams without a conference win.

BC, which outscored the Corsairs every quarter, dominated the game almost from start to finish.

Four players scored in double figures for the Renegades (6-12, 1-5 WSC), including Jasmine Martinez, who scored a game-high 19 points.

Leila Flores added 13 points, Sydni Morris tallied 11 points and 19 rebounds, and Kimberly Lopez came off the bench to score 10 points for BC.

Maya Stokes led Santa Monica in scoring with 18 points.

The sophomore guard from Independence High School finished the game with 8 of 17 shooting. She was 3 of 10 from behind the arc.

The Corsairs (2-16, 0-6 WSC) jumped out to an early lead and remained ahead until a three-pointer by Martinez moved the Renegades in front 11-10 with 6:47 left in the first quarter.

From that point, BC gradually pulled away and led the rest of the way.

The Renegades shot 33 percent (29 of 88) from the field as a team. Included in that total was a 6 of 30 mark on three-point attempts.

Santa Monica shot 28.2 percent from the field and was 1 of 10 from three-point range.

The biggest difference in the game was turnovers. The Corsairs had 34 of them compared to 19 for the Renegades.

BC's aggressive pressure defense recorded a season-high 26 steals. The Renegade's previous high in thefts this season was 16.

BC also recorded season highs in rebounds (58) and assists (22).

This week, the Renegades will play a pair of road games. They will face LA Valley College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Citrus College on Saturday at 5 p.m.
