Bakersfield Adds a Conference Win over COC

BAKERSFIELD, CA - The Bakersfield College women's volleyball team improved to 2-0 in Western State Conference play with a 25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16 victory over College of the Canyons on Friday night at the Gil Bishop Sports Center.

The Renegades, 6-5 overall, had a balanced offensive attack led by sophomore middle blocker Haley Tedrow and freshman outside hitter Brianna Bowyer with 10 kills each. The duo was followed closely on the stat sheet by Kamryn Briggs (9 kills), Aubrey Dees (8 kills) and Alexandria Johnson (7 kills).

Dees started at setter and dished out a team-high 20 assists, as BC defeated the Cougars for the first time since sweeping COC two years ago.

Last season Canyons (5-8, 1-1 WSC) won both matches between the conference rivals.

Dees, a sophomore from Tehachapi, tied for the team lead for aces (4) with Johnson, who played an outstanding match both offensively and defensively, recording a team-high 15 digs.

Kya Jones and Briggs had 14 and 12 digs, respectively.

BC controlled the first two sets and looked like going for a quick sweep after taking an early lead in the third set. But Canyons battled back and forced a fourth game.

The Renegades trailed by four points early in Game No. 4 before mounting a charge, spurred by an outstanding defensive effort and some perfectly placed kills by Johnson, Dees and others.

BC returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to West LA for a 6 p.m. WSC match against the Wildcats.
