FULLERTON'S BIG INNING SINKS BC BASEBALL

Smartball and Smallball weren't enough to topple Fullerton at Gerry Collis Field Saturday

Luke Andrews was cruising along pitching a three-hitter when everything came undone for the Bakersfield College right-hander in the sixth inning against Fullerton College on Saturday.

Andrews allowed six hits in a row, including three for extra bases, in the sixth as the Hornets scored four runs to take the lead en route to a 7-2 win at Gerry Collis Field.

Fullerton edged BC 3-2 on Friday night in Game 1 of the two-game series.

"They put together a big inning," BC coach Tim Painton said. "It was frenzied hitting…We couldn't get anyone hot quick enough in the bullpen to get them into the game. Up to this point we've been a very, very good ball club with two-out RBIs. We've done a very good job of picking baserunners up from scoring position. And we didn't this weekend."

The Renegades (5-3) rallied from an early 1-0 to deficit to take a 2-1 lead an inning earlier.

Harrison Smith led off the frame with a walk. Harley Lopez followed with single. Following a sacrifice bunt by Jassen Oliver, both scored during an at bat by Kyle James.

First Lopez reached home safely after an errant pickoff throw to second base by Hornets' starting pitcher Junior Ramirez. Moments later James plated Lopez with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Andrews retired 13 of the 14 previous batters he faced before Fullerton (5-1) broke the game open in the sixth.

After Joey Parente smacked a one-out single, Justin Row and Laine Huffman drilled back-to-back doubles to give the Hornets back the lead, 3-2. Austin O'Banion then hammered a RBI triple and Shane Carrier followed with a RBI single. David Miranda kept things going with another single before Andrews was lifted in favor of Austin Toerner, who struck out two batters in a row to finally end the inning.

Fullerton added two more runs off of Toerner in the seventh for its final margin of victory.

"The level of competition jumped up a lit bit," Painton said. "They're a very good club but we just didn't execute the things we've executed early in the season this weekend."

Andrews allowed five runs on nine hits during his 5 1/3 inning of work. He didn't issue any walks and registered one strike out.

"I thought he was really good until that inning kind of opened up on him," Painton said. "Who knows (what happened with him)? It's early in the season but his pitch-count was fine. I think he kind of got caught up in the moment a little bit. I'm not sure. But I thought he was really good through five innings. He did a good job with the slider. He did a good job with the sinker. That inning everything flattened out and they were able put the barrel of the bat on the baseball."

While Andrews took the loss, Ramirez was the winning pitcher.

The big righty surrendered two runs on five hits and had one walk and five strikeouts.

The Hornets finished with 11 hits.

Hanz Harker had two of BC's six hits.

He was the only Renegades player to reach base safely twice in the game.

BC returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 18) when it begins a three-game series on the road against Golden West.

The Renegades next home game is Thursday March 10 versus LA Mission.
