MARTINEZ PROPELS BC BASEBALL AGAIN!

Different game, same outcome: Luis Martinez is calling on every generation of Martinez-greatness for his recent outburst; last game it was two homers, today it's four RBI including a walk-off game winner with the bases loaded.
Different game, same outcome: Luis Martinez is calling on every generation of Martinez-greatness for his recent outburst; last game it was two homers, today it's four RBI including a walk-off game winner with the bases loaded.

The Bakersfield College baseball team rallied from behind three times and claimed a dramatic 10-9, 10-inning victory over LA Mission College at Gerry Collis Field on Thursday.

Luis Martinez had four RBIs including the game-winning hit, a bases loaded, walk off, infield single.

Martinez's heroics came after Harrison Smith sent the game to extra innings with a clutch solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.

"I felt like we competed extremely well," BC coach Tim Painton said. "Every time they scored we had an answer. I'm extremely proud of our kids."

Austin Toerner pitched 1 and 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win, which improved BC to 2-0 in Western State Conference-South play.

BC (9-5, 2-0 WSC) trailed 5-1 after two innings but took the lead temporarily with four runs in the third and one in the fourth.

The Eagles scored two run in the seventh to move back ahead again. But the Renegades tied things in the bottom half of the frame after Tyson Brewer drilled a triple that scored Smith, who led off the inning with a double.

LA Mission (6-11, 0-2) moved back out in front with a run in the ninth before Smith hit a towering fly ball over the left field fence for his second homer of the season.

Later Martinez ended things with a slow roller that the left the Eagles second baseman with no chance to make a play at the plate.

The game-winning rally started when Caleb Hewes greeted LA Mission reliever Peter Abinati with a line drive single. One batter later Brooks Douglas' sacrifice bunt attempt was mishandled by Abinati putting runner of first a second with no outs.

Harley Lopez then bunted both runners over a base before the Eagles decided to intentionally walk Hanz Harker.

That brought Martinez, BC's cleanup hitter to the plate and he delivered with his eighth RBI in two games, both wins against LA Mission.

The Renegades had 15 hits off a trio of Eagles pitchers. Seven of BC's hits went for extra bases.

Martinez and Brewer, who paced the Renegades with three hits apiece combined for four extra base hits. Brewer had two triples and Martinez collected a pair RBI doubles.

BC starting pitcher Monty Stevens got a no-decision. The freshman right hander from Frontier High School allowed six runs on 12 hits. He issued three walks and recorded five strikeouts.

"Monty wasn't sharp early and we got down 5-1 and our offense had to get us back in it and they did," Painton said. "They continued to answer all day long. The bullpen did a decent job, coming in and keeping us close. But our offense really did a great job today at staying after the game for 10 innings."
