Men's Basketball Falls to Moorpark on Home Opener

BAKERSFIELD, CA - The Bakersfield College men's basketball team's home opener went down to the wire on Thursday night.

Unfortunately for the Renegades, a late-game foul opened the door for Moorpark to escape with a hard-fought victory over BC, 67-65.

Sophomore guard Jack Benyshek sank two free throws with five seconds remaining to lift the Raiders (4-2) past a Renegades squad that came back from a 14-point second-half deficit to tie the game two seconds earlier on a Malik Petty layup.

Petty's clutch basket came after a steal on BC end of the court by Terrin Dickey.

The game looked like it was headed for overtime, but after inbounding the ball, Benyshek was fouled in the backcourt, putting him at the free-throw line for two shots.

Dickey had 14 points and 10 rebounds for BC, which trailed by 14 points with 12 minutes left in the game.

The Renegades (1-3) rallied late with a 17-5 run spearheaded by Dickey. The 6-foot-8 sophomore center made a layup with 5:11 left in the game to pull BC within two, 60-58.

One minute and 27 seconds later, Larry Atkerson tied things with a basket inside the paint, leading to the game's dramatic conclusion.

Elijah Williams had 11 points and 7 rebounds for the Renegades before he left the game in the second half with an apparent left knee injury.

Benyshek finished with a game-high 28 points.

"Bottom line, it's college, and you got to finish at the rim, and we didn't do that," BC coach Aaron Chavez said. "…I like my group, but we got to play better. It's frustrating."

The Renegades return to action on Monday when they go on the road to face Reedley. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
