Men's Basketball Struggle Late against Santa Monica Costing Them Another Loss on the Season

BAKERSFIELD, CA - A late-game scoring drought cost the Bakersfield College men's basketball team a likely victory over Western State-South Conference rival Santa Monica College on Saturday.

The Renegades failed to score in the final 4:25 of the game, and the Corsairs rallied from a seven-point deficit during that time span to defeat BC 57-54 at the Gil Bishop Sports Center.

Tyler Silva, whose hot first-half shooting helped propel the Renegades (10-9, 1-5 WSC) to a 13-point lead late in the opening stanza, finished with a team-high 15 points.

Andrew Hill added 12 points for BC, which lost its fourth straight.

David Solomon led Santa Monica (10-10, 3-3 WSC) in scoring with 14 points.

The Renegades struggled with their shooting stroke the entire game, but particularly in the second half. BC made just 25 percent (6 of 24) of its field goal attempts after the intermission and finished at 32.8 percent for the game, despite making 6 of 11 three-point attempts.

The Corsairs shot 44.7 percent (17 of 38) from the floor. They were just one for six from behind the arc.

The early part of the contest was completely dominated by the Renegades. BC jumped out to a 10-1 lead two and a half minutes into the game.

Elijah Williams' dunk with 1:47 remaining before halftime extended the Renegades' advantage to 34-21.

But the Corsairs steadily chipped away at BC's double-digit lead during the second half and went ahead for the first time, and for good, with 18 seconds left on Elijah Scranton's layup.

BC is on the road for both of its games this coming week. The Renegades will face LA Valley College on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Citrus College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
