The showdown between Western State Conference South leaders Bakersfield College and Antelope Valley College ended up being a beat-down as the Renegades blasted the visiting Marauders 95-74 on Wednesday night at the Gil Bishop Sports Center.

BC led by as many as 32 points in handing the two-time defending league champions and state-ranked No. 13 team their first 20-point loss in more than two years.

"They came to play, BC coach Rich Hughes said. "And when they come to play they can beat anybody. I'm just proud of them because Saturday was a bad loss for us and they really responded tonight."

The No. 20 Renegades, who came into the night tied atop the WSC South standings with Antelope Valley, Glendale, and Santa Monica, were led in scoring by Nick Velasquez with 21 points.

All five BC starters scored in double figures.

Deandre Dickson had 16 points, including a pair of highlight-reel dunks, and nine rebounds and state assist leader Jameik Riviere added 15 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds for the Renegades (15-4, 4-1 WSC).

Lawrence Moore and Shane Christie chipped in 13 points apiece for BC, which improved to 5-0 at home this season.

Jalen Etienne paced Antelope Valley (17-3, 3-2 WSC) in scoring with 14 points.

BC shot a sizzling 51.5-percent from the field and led almost the entire way.

Trailing 8-7 after Nevell Lenard's free throw with 15:44 remaining in the first half, BC went on a 26-8 run to break the game open.

"It was a great win," Hughes said. "It sets a statement for us in the state as well as the conference. They're the two-time defending conference champs and we knew we had to go through them and we handled the first game. Now we have to concentrate on West LA."

The Renegades led 47-33 at halftime before back-to-back dunks by Dickson midway through the second half helped expand their advantage to 32 points.

BC, the state's fourth-highest scoring team, was 12 of 23 from three-point range.

Velasquez connected on 5 of 11 three-point attempts.

The Renegades held the Marauders, who came into the game shooting 46.3-percent from the field to 36.8-percent (25 of 68) for the game.

Hughes pointed to defense as the thing he was most pleased about in an overall outstanding performance by BC.

"We were letting teams score 70 (all the time)," Hughes said. "And we did tonight but I think towards the got a little bit helter-skelter. I think if it was a typical game we would have held them in the 60s. If we're holding teams anywhere from  68 to 74 points, we're going to win if our offense is clicking like it was tonight."

Prior to Wednesday night's victory, BC was 0-4 against Antelope Valley since the Marauders joined the conference for the 2013-14 season.

BC and Antelope Valley play again on Feb 13th in Lancaster.
