The Bakersfield College Men's basketball team (21-5, 11-2) lost to Antelope Valley College (21-6, 7-5) 70-68 Saturday night in Lancaster.
"They are just a good team. We are pretty evenly matched, but we didn't come in here expecting to lose. And like Coach (Rich) Hughes said, we have to win by ten on the road. They have a good record for a reason," Associate Head Coach Aaron Chavez said.
Deandre Dickson scored 20 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead Bakersfield, but state assists leading point guard Jameik Riviere was held to 18 points and just two assists.
"They aren't going to give you easy looks. You are going to have to fight for shots," Coach Chavez said of the low assist numbers.
With nine seconds left on the clock and BC down by two, Jameik Riviere took the side out of bounds pass and sank an eight footer from the paint to tie the game at 68-68.
"Then with 6.3 seconds on the clock, Antelope Valley quickly inbouded the ball and one of their players had slipped behind our defense, and Jalen Etienne passed the ball over our heads and found Gregory Wesley who sank the go-ahead shot with less than two seconds left on the clock, " Associate Head Coach Aaron Chavez said.
Coach Rich Hughes called a timeout and drew up a play, but Antelope Valley managed to steal the ball on the inbound pass to secure the win.
BC remains two games ahead in first place of the Western State Conference South with just two games remaining in the season. A Glendale loss, or if BC wins this Wednesday at 7p when they host West Los Angeles College in the Gil Bishop Sports Center, they would clinch their first solo conference title in more than a decade.
